System Design Specialist Shawn Conaway specified the WaterGuard system to address groundwater entry. Foreman Jacob Schultz and his crew, Colby and Jeremiah, breached the concrete floor slab along the perimeter to install this sub-floor, non-clogging drainage conduit. The track sits cleanly above the footing to collect wall and joint seepage without risking soil clog failures.

To ensure uninterrupted water evacuation, the crew integrated the TripleSafe sump pump system into the lowest point of the slab. This station houses a primary 1/3 HP pump for standard duty, a secondary 1/2 HP high-output pump for extreme weather surges, and a battery backup emergency pump to maintain operation during regional power outages.

The production crew mechanically anchored a 20-mil thick, poly-reinforced CleanSpace liner to the foundation walls, sealing the top edge to isolate the home from damp earth walls. They paired this with CleanSpace drainage matting at the base, forcing all wall weeping to funnel directly down behind the liner and straight into the drainage track.

To permanently eliminate ambient humidity and musty aromas, the team deployed a high-efficiency SaniDry Sedona dehumidification unit. This low-temperature system extracts up to 100 pints of water per day and was calibrated to maintain a continuous, sub-50 percent relative humidity matrix, effectively arresting the mold replication cycle.

High water tables and poor lateral soil drainage forced groundwater through the cold joint—the vulnerable floor-to-wall juncture—and porous concrete masonry units. This continuous water ingress caused active pooling across the floor slab.

Ambient relative humidity levels consistently exceeded 70 percent within the space. This sustained moisture saturation created an environment optimized for mold sporulation, leading to structural material degradation and strong, musty olfactory signatures.

The property's existing sump pump configuration lacked both the mechanical redundancy and the volumetric pumping capacity required to handle peak hydrostatic surges during heavy midwestern precipitation events, creating a high risk of catastrophic pump failure.

When we think of home maintenance, we often look up at the roof or inside at the plumbing, completely overlooking the very ground we walk on. For one homeowner in Peoria, Illinois, a shifting walkway had slowly turned their flat, welcoming entrance into something resembling a miniature mountain range. It was a stressful sight, especially with grandkids frequently running around the property. Nobody wants a family visit interrupted by an Olympic-grade ankle flip, so they made the smart choice to call in the team at MidAmerica Basement Systems before the trip hazards could get any worse.

The journey to smooth concrete started with our System Design Specialist, Tim Rollet, who arrived to inspect the shifting walkway. Tim took the time to investigate the root cause of the problem, decoding exactly why the slabs were sinking so he could create a permanent fix. Once the plan was locked in, our dynamic production duo—foreman Justin Maddox and his skilled crew member Devin—headed out to the property to bring the strategy to life.

Justin and Devin got right to work utilizing our advanced PolyLevel system. They began by drilling precise, pecan-sized holes into the sunken sections of the walkway. Through these small entry points, they injected a high-density polyurethane foam that expands rapidly beneath the surface. Like a pastry chef perfectly lifting dough, the foam gently nudged the heavy concrete slabs back up to their original, uniform level. To ensure the walkway stays safe and beautiful for years to come, Justin and Devin wrapped up the job using NexusPro joint sealant, which protects the cracks from harsh freeze-thaw cycles and water damage. By the time the crew packed up, the walkway was as smooth as butter, leaving behind a highly relieved homeowner and a much safer environment for the whole family.

Foreman Jacob Quinn and his crew, Caleb and Val, engineered a multi-tiered defense system to permanently decouple the basement from the local water table. The team breached the slab perimeter to install the WaterGuard drainage piping along the footing, ensuring a clear path to collect wall seepage and sub-floor water without clogging from soil fines. They routed this system into a TripleSafe Sump Pump basin equipped with primary, secondary, and battery-powered backup pumps to handle heavy surges and potential power grid failures. To halt vapor drive, the crew mechanically fastened a 20-mil thick, reinforced CleanSpace liner to the foundation walls, channeling moisture down into the drainage track. Finally, they installed a SaniDry Sedona dehumidifier, plumbing it directly into the sump basin to automatically maintain ambient relative humidity below fifty percent, converting the damp chaos into a permanently dry, healthy extension of the home.

The residential property in Moline, IL, suffered from severe hydrostatic pressure and moisture intrusion through the foundation walls and floor-to-wall joints. This chronic subterranean water entry, combined with unregulated vapor transmission through the porous concrete, created a high-humidity environment characterized by persistent dampness and musty odors. The homeowners were unable to safely utilize their below-grade space, which faced an ongoing threat of structural water damage and mold germination. System Design Specialist Dillon Heard diagnosed the mechanics of the moisture entry, identifying a critical need for an integrated sub-floor drainage system and a heavy-duty atmospheric vapor barrier to stabilize the space.

The entire engineering solution was executed with minimal disruption to the homeowner and zero damage to the surrounding landscaping.

By utilizing PolyLevel® and NexusPro®, MidAmerica Basement Systems successfully eliminated the entry hazards, restored full wheelchair accessibility, and extended the lifespan of the existing concrete. The homeowner was left with a permanent, structurally stable, and aesthetically uniform entryway.

Over time, environmental factors and poor subgrade compaction caused the soil beneath the entry slabs to erode and settle. This created localized voids, causing the heavy concrete slabs to sink unevenly.

Accessibility Barrier: The vertical displacement between the slabs exceeded acceptable ADA and residential safety thresholds, presenting a jarring hurdle for wheelchair users.

Safety Hazard: The uneven joints posed a continuous trip-and-fall risk at the primary point of egress.

Asset Deterioration: Left unaddressed, moisture intrusion through the open joints would accelerate subgrade washout, leading to further sinking or structural failure of the concrete.

A comprehensive site inspection by a MidAmerica System Design Specialist confirmed that the structural integrity of the concrete slabs was intact, making the property an ideal candidate for trenchless polyurethane lifting rather than a costly and disruptive replace-and-pour project.

MidAmerica Basement Systems successfully remediated severe lateral foundation deflection and chronic groundwater infiltration in a Coggon, IA basement. The engineered solution designed by Daniel Kelchen and executed by Foreman Jacob Oetzman and his crew (Jose, Antonio, and Colby) utilized GeoLock® Wall Anchors for structural stabilization, a WaterGuard® drainage system paired with a TripleSafe™ sump pump matrix for sub-floor hydro-management, and TerraBlock® insulation alongside a SaniDry™ Sedona dehumidifier for total environmental control. The project permanently secured the foundation and established a pristine, climate-controlled environment optimized for the safe storage of family heirlooms.

Every home tells a story, but for one family in Coggon, Iowa, the story their basement was telling was getting downright scary. They had a beautiful collection of family heirlooms they wanted to protect, alongside a desperate need for usable extra square footage. Instead, they were dealing with a basement that felt less like a storage space and more like a high-stress liability. The foundation walls were physically bowing inward under the weight of the expanding earth outside, and water was constantly seeping through the joints, sending the humidity levels through the roof. Realizing their precious memories were one heavy rainstorm away from being ruined, they called in the experts at MidAmerica Basement Systems.

Our System Design Specialist, Daniel Kelchen, arrived on-site to perform a rigorous diagnostic inspection. He pinpointed two major threats: extreme hydrostatic pressure from the outside soil causing structural deflection in the walls, and a high water table that was aggressively pushing groundwater into the living space. To save the basement, Daniel engineered a heavy-duty, multi-layered remediation strategy designed to fix the structural issues and the water problems simultaneously.

With the blueprint in hand, Foreman Jacob Oetzman and his elite production crew—Jose, Antonio, and Colby—rolled in with the heavy equipment to bring the design to life. The team tackled the structural failure first using the GeoLock® Wall Anchor system. Jose and Antonio worked outside, embedding heavy-duty steel earth plates deep into the stable, undisturbed soil well past the active expansion zone. Inside, Colby drilled precision access ports through the walls to run high-tensile steel rods out to those earth plates, anchoring them firmly to heavy-duty steel plates on the interior basement walls. Jacob then tensioned the entire system to exact specifications, instantly locking the bowing walls in place and stopping the structural damage in its tracks.

Next, the crew shifted their focus to the water invasion. They carefully broke through the perimeter floor slab along the footings to install our premier WaterGuard® sub-floor drainage conduit. This system intercepts water right at the footing-wall joint, catching leaks before they can ever touch the basement floor. Jose, Antonio, and Colby routed this drainage line directly into a TripleSafe™ Sump Pump Matrix. This powerhouse system features three levels of protection: a primary pump for standard water volume, a secondary high-output pump for extreme weather influx, and a battery-powered backup pump that takes over if a storm knocks out the local power grid.

To turn the newly dried space into a truly comfortable, storage-ready environment, the team encapsulated the floor with TerraBlock® insulation. This durable barrier stops cold temperatures and moisture vapor from rising up through the concrete slab. Finally, they installed a SaniDry™ Sedona dehumidifier to actively filter the air and keep the relative humidity safely below 50%, completely eliminating the risk of mold or musty odors. Thanks to the precise design by Daniel and the flawless mechanical execution by Jacob and his crew, these Coggon homeowners can finally rest easy knowing their structure is safe, their air is clean, and their family heirlooms are perfectly protected for generations to come.

To resolve these challenges, System Design Specialist Daniel Kelchen engineered a multi-tiered remediation plan executed to precise specifications by Foreman Jacob Oetzman and his production crew—Jose, Antonio, and Colby. To permanently stabilize the failing foundation walls against external soil loads, the crew deployed the GeoLock® Wall Anchor system. Jose and Antonio embedded heavy-duty steel earth plates into stable, undisturbed soil deep outside the foundation. Colby then drove high-tensile steel rods horizontally through the foundation to connect these external plates to heavy-duty interior steel wall plates. Jacob tensioned the entire assembly to exact mechanical specifications, immediately arresting the lateral movement and securing the wall into a configuration that allows for incremental straightening over time.

To manage the hydrological influx, the crew breached the perimeter floor slab along the footings to install the WaterGuard® sub-floor drainage conduit. Positioned precisely atop the footing to prevent clogging, this engineered profile intercepts foundational water weeping before it migrates across the slab surface. The perimeter channel was routed directly into a TripleSafe™ Sump Pump Matrix, a redundant system featuring a primary pump for standard volume, a secondary high-volume pump for extreme influx, and an UltraRUSH® battery-backup pump to guarantee uninterrupted operation during total local grid power failure.

To complete the environmental transformation, the crew encapsulated the floor with TerraBlock® insulation, an industrial-grade barrier that breaks the thermal bridge with the cold earth and prevents moisture vapor transmission. Finally, a SaniDry™ Sedona dehumidification system was integrated to actively filter the air down to 2 microns and maintain relative humidity below 50%. The condensed water was gravity-fed directly into the sump matrix, finalizing a fully automated system that transformed a high-liability space into a pristine, climate-controlled storage environment.

The residential structure in Coggon, Iowa, presented a complex combination of structural failure and severe hydrological duress. Expansive soils surrounding the concrete masonry unit foundation walls had subjected the infrastructure to extreme lateral hydrostatic pressure. This sustained external force resulted in inward wall deflection, horizontal shearing along the frost line, and significantly compromised structural integrity.

Concurrently, high water-table dynamics caused groundwater to breach the footing-wall joint via capillary action and hydrostatic pressure. This resulted in active, continuous weeping across the basement floor and drove ambient relative humidity levels past 75%. This highly saturated environment threatened the upper framing with moisture rot, compromised indoor air quality, and rendered the subterranean square footage entirely unusable for the homeowner's primary objective: the safe, long-term storage of sensitive family heirlooms.

To permanently stabilize the concrete and eliminate the drainage hazard, the team deployed a two-part technical solution. First, the sub-grade required deep consolidation using PolyLevel, a high-density, hydro-insensitive polyurethane polymer engineered to expand beneath the slabs, fill hidden subterranean voids, and lift the concrete back to its original elevation. Following the lift, the surface required a permanent moisture barrier to prevent future soil erosion. This was achieved using NexusPro Joint Sealant, a highly flexible, UV-resistant silicone compound designed to seal all cracks and control joints against water infiltration while accommodating ongoing thermal expansion and contraction.

The Manchester, IA property exhibited localized slab settlement adjacent to the residential foundation. This settlement altered the original grading profile, transforming a functional concrete walkway/patio into a catchment area.

During the site evaluation, System Design Specialist Shawn Conaway identified a negative slope gradient pitching directly toward the structure. This configuration allowed stormwater to pool against the foundation wall, significantly increasing hydrostatic pressure and the risk of sub-grade water intrusion.

In the charming town of Walcott, Iowa, a local homeowner was dealing with a persistent and increasingly unsettling property issue: a sinking concrete slab right at their front door. While "making a grand entrance" is usually a positive phrase, experiencing an unexpected tumble on your own doorstep is anything but hospitable.

For this specific homeowner, the situation had already crossed the line from a minor nuisance into a major safety hazard. A previous trip on the uneven concrete had unfortunately resulted in a broken ankle.
The journey toward a safer home began when the customer reached out to our office. Our friendly Customer Care Specialist promptly scheduled a comprehensive, on-site home evaluation with one of our seasoned professionals.

Chris Hebbel, our expert System Design Specialist, arrived to assess the damage. After a thorough evaluation of the grading, the void beneath the concrete, and the extent of the drop, Chris knew exactly what was needed. The diagnosis called for a modern approach to concrete leveling: PolyLevel®.

PolyLevel is the true superhero of the concrete restoration industry. Unlike traditional mudjacking, which relies on heavy, messy grout mixtures that can sink further over time, PolyLevel utilizes a high-strength, lightweight polyurethane foam. The process is elegant and highly effective: technicians drill tiny, pea-sized holes directly into the sunken slab, then inject the liquid polyurethane beneath it. As the foam undergoes a chemical reaction, it expands rapidly, filling voids, stabilizing the subgrade, and precisely lifting the heavy concrete slab back into its original, level position.

With the customized design plan finalized by Chris, our proficient production crew rolled up their sleeves and headed to Walcott. Led by Foreman Justin Maddox and supported by dedicated crew member Tanner, the team arrived armed with diligence, specialized equipment, and a commitment to perfection.

Justin and Tanner swiftly executed the tried-and-true PolyLevel installation process. Working cleanly and meticulously, they monitored the lift to the millimeter, ensuring the walkway seamlessly met the front threshold once again. Within a matter of minutes, the hazardous, sloped concrete was transformed back into a perfectly level, rock-solid walkway.

True to our company standards, the job wasn't finished just because the concrete was level. Upon concluding the injection, Justin and Tanner meticulously cleaned the workspace, filling and sealing the tiny injection holes to blend in beautifully, leaving the property even cleaner than they found it. To the relieved homeowner, they felt less like a construction crew and more like "concrete guardian angels."

Today, the once-troubled front entrance in Walcott, IA stands level, sturdy, and reliable. The homeowner can finally step confidently through the front door, entirely safe from unwanted slips, trips, or falls.

By pairing the right technology with an exceptional team—from Chris's strategic evaluation to Justin and Tanner's precise execution—we didn't just restore the functionality of a concrete slab. Above all, we provided a remarkable, stress-free experience to a cherished customer, proving that when it comes to structural stability, we always have it completely nailed (or rather, injected!).

With the blueprint in hand, Foreman Justin Maddox and crew member Tanner arrived on-site ready to execute the plan and save the family’s summer cookouts.

Justin and Tanner began by drilling small, penny-sized holes into the sunken sections of the patio. They then injected our high-strength PolyLevel® polyurethane foam beneath the concrete. As the liquid foam filled the hidden voids, it expanded rapidly, gently lifting and stabilizing the heavy slabs back to their original, level position.

To ensure a lasting repair, the crew then introduced NexusPro®. Tanner and Justin meticulously applied this premium joint sealant to all the cracks and joints across the patio. This step was crucial; it created a durable, waterproof barrier that prevents future rainwater from seeping under the concrete and washing away the supporting soil.

Thanks to the seamless teamwork of Ryan, Justin, and Tanner, the project was a total success. The entire process was completed quickly, cleanly, and without the need for bulky, yard-destroying machinery. The homeowner was incredibly relieved to see their patio transformed from a rocky trip hazard into a smooth, safe oasis. With a problem-solved high-five all around, the backyard was officially handed back to the homeowners—perfectly level and fully ready for future friendly gatherings and perfectly cooked steaks.

A homeowner in Bettendorf, Iowa, reached out to our team with a frustrating problem: their backyard concrete patio was starting to sink and sag. Over time, normal soil settling had left the concrete slabs uneven.

Not only was the shifting concrete an eyesore and a major trip hazard, but it was also putting a serious damper on the homeowners' outdoor lifestyle. With barbecue season right around the corner, nobody wanted to risk a tilted grill or a guest tripping during a backyard get-together. Fearing the complications would only get worse and more expensive if left ignored, they called in our team to find a permanent fix.

The process began with a call to our friendly Customer Care team, who quickly scheduled a free, detailed inspection. Our System Design Specialist, Ryan Nolen, visited the Bettendorf home to perform a thorough examination of the patio.

Ryan assessed the extent of the settling and confirmed that the underlying soil had developed voids, causing the heavy slabs to sink. To resolve the issue efficiently without the mess and high cost of ripping out the entire patio, Ryan designed a custom restoration plan utilizing our advanced PolyLevel® and NexusPro® systems.

Justin and Tanner drilled minute, penny-sized holes into the compromised slabs. They artfully injected our high-strength PolyLevel® liquid polymer beneath the concrete. As the foam expanded, it filled the voids and gently lifted the heavy driveway and walkway slabs back into perfect alignment.

Once the concrete was perfectly leveled, the crew applied NexusPro® Joint Sealant. This durable sealant closed off the joints, ensuring that rainwater and snowmelt could no longer sneak beneath the slabs and wash away the supporting soil.

Justin and Tanner packed up the truck, leaving behind perfectly aligned, stable concrete patches. The homeowner was left with absolute peace of mind and a yard that is officially marked "safe" for family and friends.

At MidAmerica Basement Systems, putting customers first and restoring their pride in their home is the entirety of our story!

Our Customer Care team quickly scheduled a property inspection. System Design Specialist Toney Genova arrived on-site to evaluate the structural integrity of the walkway.

Toney diagnosed that voids in the soil beneath the slabs were causing the drop. He designed a targeted, non-invasive remediation plan utilizing two premium products:

PolyLevel®: To fill the voids and lift the heavy slabs back to their original plane.

NexusPro®: To seal the joints and cracks, preventing future water infiltration and soil erosion.

The transformation was immediate. What was once a slippery, hazardous scramble was restored to a smooth, stroll-friendly promenade.

By opting for polyurethane lifting over a traditional concrete repour, the homeowners saved time, avoided a torn-up yard, and were able to walk on their level walkway the very same day. Thanks to the expert design by Toney and the flawless execution by Chris and Markell, the home’s curb appeal was completely restored with a permanent, reliable fix.

Ever feel like you need a safety harness and hiking boots just to walk down your own front pathway?

It's a pretty common story. As concrete ages, the soil underneath shifts, washes away, or settles. Before you know it, your perfectly flat walkway starts resembling a miniature mountain range right in your front yard.

That's exactly the concrete conundrum one of our homeowners in Davenport, IA was facing. Tripping hazards had turned their once-smooth walkway into an impromptu obstacle course-definitely not the fun surprise they were hoping for when welcoming family and friends to their door.

Once the homeowners reached out to MidAmerica Basement Systems, our Customer Care Specialist swung into action to get them on the schedule. Enter System Design Specialist Toney Genova, who brought his superhero toolbelt of expertise straight to the scene.

After a thorough assessment, Toney diagnosed the issue. The verdict? Those sinking, rebellious slabs were crying out for a lift and some heavy-duty joint sealing. He designed a customized plan using our favorite dynamic duo: PolyLevel® and NexusPro®.

On installation day, Foreman Chris Allen and crew member Markell arrived ready to roll. While they tried to "tiptoe" onto the scene, let’s be honest—it’s pretty hard to stay under the radar in our bright, hi-vis vests!

The crew got right to work executing Toney's design:

The Lift: Chris and Markell injected our PolyLevel® system beneath the sunken slabs. This high-strength polyurethane foam expands rapidly, gently lifting the concrete back to its original position and filling the empty voids below. (Let’s just say it’s the stuff under-concrete dreams are made of!)

The Seal: Next up, they used NexusPro® joint sealant to lock everything into place, cramming those ugly cracks shut tighter than an old winter parka after a massive holiday dinner.

And voila! The outcome was beautifully leveled concrete surfaces and incredibly happy homeowners who can finally wave goodbye to driveway Olympic trials.

A huge shoutout to Toney, Chris, and Markell for delivering the kind of remarkable service and reliability we pride ourselves on. Putting our customers first every step of the way isn't just a slogan for us—it’s just how we do business.

The Strategy: Rather than recommending a costly, messy, and time-consuming concrete replacement (demolition and repouring), Shawn designed a minimally invasive restoration plan utilizing advanced geopolymer injection and joint sealing. Foreman Ricky Sigala and his specialized production crew were deployed to execute the structural remediation following a precise, two-step system.

Step 1: Slab Lifting and Stabilization via PolyLevel®: The crew drilled small, penny-sized holes into the sunken concrete slabs and injected PolyLevel®, a high-strength, waterproof polyurethane foam, beneath the surface. Upon injection, the foam underwent a chemical reaction, expanding rapidly to fill the underlying voids. The immense, controlled lifting pressure of the foam gently raised the drooping concrete back to its original, level position. This achieved immediate stabilization, ensuring the slabs would no longer sink under weight.

Step 2: Environmental Protection via NexusPro®: With the sidewalk perfectly leveled, the crew applied NexusPro® Joint Sealant along the joints and cracks. This specialized sealant is highly resistant to UV rays and harsh Midwestern weather conditions. By sealing these gaps, the team created a barrier that prevents moisture, water runoff, and weeds from penetrating the soil underneath, safeguarding the repair against future erosion.

The Results: The entire production was completed cleanly and efficiently, leaving the job site immaculate. The dangerous, faulty tilts were completely eliminated, replaced by a smooth, uniform horizon. The homeowner’s anxiety regarding trip-and-fall injuries was fully resolved, allowing them to host barbecues and enjoy evening strolls on a safe, permanently stabilized sidewalk.

The Problem: A homeowner in Waterloo, Iowa, reached out to MidAmerica Basement Systems with growing safety concerns regarding their concrete sidewalk. Over time, the soil beneath the concrete had eroded, creating empty pockets or "pesky voids." Without proper subgrade support, the heavy concrete slabs unevenly sank into the ground.

The Risk: This shifting created dramatic, faulty angles and significant vertical lips between the slabs. The resulting uneven walkway posed a high-risk trip hazard for family members and guests, threatening to turn everyday outdoor activities and backyard barbecues into dangerous liabilities.

The Diagnostic: System Design Specialist Shawn Conaway conducted a thorough on-site evaluation of the property. He identified that while the concrete slabs themselves were still structurally intact, the underlying soil failure was the root cause of the sinking.

To address the ingress, a dual-component mechanical system was engineered to intercept and evacuate water before it reached the finished floor surface. This began with the installation of the WaterGuard sub-floor drainage system. A trench was excavated along the interior perimeter of the basement footing, and the system was positioned away from the mud zone to prevent future clogging. This piping profile collects wall seepage and floor-joint water, channeling it via gravity to the sump pit. The system was then backfilled and capped with high-strength concrete to restore the structural profile of the floor.

To manage the collected water, we integrated the TripleSafe Sump Pump system. This configuration provides three distinct levels of protection. The primary pump handles standard fluid loads, while a secondary high-volume pump activates automatically if the primary unit fails or is overwhelmed by extreme inflow. Finally, a battery-operated tertiary pump ensures continuous operation during power failures, which are frequent during severe regional thunderstorms.

The integration of the WaterGuard and TripleSafe systems successfully shifted the property's water management from a reactive to a proactive state. Hydrostatic pressure is now effectively relieved through the sub-floor conduit, preventing the accumulation of standing water. By eliminating the source of moisture, the basement's relative humidity has stabilized and the associated odors have been mitigated. The homeowner now possesses a triple-redundant discharge system that secures the basement as a dry, viable space for storage and habitability.

Upon inspection by our System Design Specialist, several critical failure points were identified. Water was entering through the floor-to-wall cove joint, which indicated high hydrostatic pressure in the surrounding soil. High humidity levels had led to persistent musty odors, threatening the structural integrity of organic materials such as carpeting and drywall. Previous manual mitigation efforts were deemed insufficient for the volume of inflow.

For one local homeowner, watching their foundation walls slowly bow inward was a source of mounting anxiety. What starts as a hairline crack can quickly evolve into a structural nightmare. Fortunately, Foreman Brian Lopez and his crew arrived on the scene to turn the tide, proving that with the right tech and the right team, no wall is too far gone.

In our corner of Iowa, the soil is rich, but it can be incredibly heavy. When the ground gets saturated, it undergoes hydrostatic pressure. This is a fancy way of saying the soil expands and pushes against your basement with thousands of pounds of force.

In this case, the "before" photos told a clear story: the walls were losing the fight. They were bowing in the middle, threatening the stability of the entire home above.

The Hero: The PowerBrace™ System
To fix a problem this heavy, you need more than a "quick fix." You need an engineered solution. Enter the PowerBrace™.

Unlike a simple patch job, the PowerBrace™ is a system of zinc-plated steel I-beams designed to stabilize foundation walls permanently. Here’s why Brian Lopez chose this for the Waterloo project:

No Digging Required: We don't have to tear up your yard or landscaping to install it.

Zinc-Plated Prowess: These beams are galvanized to resist rust, ensuring they stay strong in the dampest basement environments.

Tight & Secure: A specialized bracket at the top allows for constant tension. This means over time, we can actually tighten the system to help push the walls back toward their original, flat position.

The Result: Peace of Mind (and Straight Walls)
Under the expert eye of Brian Lopez, the installation was a masterclass in precision. The beams were anchored to the floor joists and bolted into the concrete floor, effectively "cuddling" the home into a state of permanent security.

As you can see, the transformation is striking. The basement is no longer a source of stress; it’s a reinforced fortress.

To counter these forces, Brian Lopez utilized the PowerBrace™ system, a technical advancement over traditional wall anchors. This system utilizes zinc-plated steel I-beams that are anchored to both the basement floor and the floor joists above.

Technical Specifications & Installation:

Load Distribution: The beams are secured to the floor joists using heavy-duty steel brackets. This transfers the lateral load from the wall into the floor system of the house.

Floor Bolt Integration: At the base, a specialized bracket is bolted to the concrete floor, creating a rigid "brace" that prevents any further inward sliding of the wall's footer.

Adjustable Tensioning: Unlike static solutions, the PowerBrace™ features a patented adjustment mechanism at the top. This allows Brian to apply immediate tension against the wall. Over time, these brackets can be tightened during dry seasons to potentially push the wall back toward its original vertical position.

Corrosion Resistance: The entire system is zinc-plated (galvanized), ensuring that the high-moisture environment of a basement won't compromise the steel's structural capacity over decades of service.

Under the supervision of Brian Lopez, the installation was calibrated to ensure even load distribution across the affected span. By calculating the spacing required to counteract the specific soil load of the Waterloo area, the team successfully:

Neutralized the inward movement of the foundation.

Reinforced the vertical load-bearing capacity of the walls.

Restored homeowner confidence through a non-invasive, high-torque mechanical solution.

The "before" state of this basement revealed a classic case of hydrostatic pressure. As the clay-heavy soils surrounding the Waterloo home became saturated, they expanded, exerting tremendous lateral force against the masonry.

When the inward pressure exceeds the wall's shear strength, the structure begins to bow. This creates:

Horizontal Cracking: Often appearing in the mid-section of the wall where the tension is highest.

Shear at the Base: The bottom course of block may slide inward relative to the floor.

Tipping at the Top: The wall leans inward as it loses its connection to the sill plate.

The project required an integrated approach to sub-floor drainage and mechanical evacuation. Toney specified a dual-component system to ensure a 100% dry environment:

WaterGuard® Sub-Floor Drainage: A non-clogging alternative to traditional exterior French drains. Toney’s design utilized this perimeter track to intercept wall-seep and floor-leakage before it reached the basement interior.

SuperSump® Premier Pump System: To handle the volume of water captured by the WaterGuard, a high-performance Zoeller 1/3 hp cast-iron pump was specified for its reliability and thermal protection.

Foreman Jacob Quinn and his production crew executed the installation with surgical precision:

Perimeter Trenching: The team carefully removed the edge of the concrete floor to create a seat for the drainage track without compromising the footing.

Filtration Bedding: The WaterGuard was installed atop a bed of clean stone to maintain optimal flow rates and prevent sediment buildup.

Mechanical Integration: Jacob expertly installed the SuperSump basin, ensuring the discharge line was optimized for maximum flow and properly angled to prevent backflow.

Aesthetic Restoration: The concrete was professionally restored, leaving the system discreetly tucked beneath the floor, ready for future basement finishing.

A residential property in Dubuque presented with advanced hydrostatic pressure issues, resulting in significant groundwater infiltration through the floor-wall joint. The moisture levels were compromising the utility of the basement and threatening the long-term integrity of the foundation’s finishing materials.

System Design Specialist Toney Genova performed a comprehensive site evaluation, identifying "weeping" walls and localized ponding.
From Vulnerability to Security: Solving the Basement Moisture Crisis in Morrison, IL

Many homeowners in Morrison, Illinois, struggle with moisture infiltration rooted in outdated basement window wells. These aging structures often act as funnels rather than barriers, allowing rainwater to collect against the foundation and seep into the living space. MidAmerica Basement Systems recently addressed a severe case of subterranean leaking by replacing a failing window system with a SunHouse Enclosure. This transition not only eliminated active water intrusion but also improved the home's thermal efficiency and natural lighting. By treating the window well as a critical component of the home's waterproof envelope, we successfully restored the basement's integrity and protected the property from long-term structural decay.

In the Midwest, a basement is only as dry as its weakest point. For this particular residence in Morrison, the primary point of failure was an antiquated window well that had become a liability. When a window well reaches the end of its lifespan, it stops shedding water and starts harboring it. This creates hydrostatic pressure directly against the basement wall, eventually forcing moisture through the frame and into the home. The result is a cycle of dampness, potential mold growth, and a basement that feels perpetually unreliable during storm season.

Our approach began with a technical assessment by one of our System Design Specialists. It was clear that standard repairs would only be a temporary fix; the existing setup was fundamentally incapable of handling modern drainage needs. We identified the SunHouse Enclosure as the ideal solution. Unlike traditional open wells that collect leaves, snow, and rain, the SunHouse is a reinforced, bright-white enclosure that features a clear, gasketed cover. This design serves a dual purpose: it creates a physical shield against the elements while reflecting significantly more natural light into the basement, instantly making the space feel more open and habitable.

The success of a foundation solution lies in the execution. Our installation crew focused on creating a seamless bond between the new enclosure and the existing foundation. This involved carefully excavating the old, rusted unit and preparing the exterior wall to ensure a watertight seal. Once the SunHouse Enclosure was anchored, the difference was immediate. The "before" state of standing water and saturated masonry was replaced by a clean, dry, and protected entry point.

Beyond the immediate fix, this project highlights the importance of proactive foundation maintenance. By choosing a high-performance enclosure over a basic replacement, these homeowners have permanently mitigated a major flood risk. The basement is no longer a source of stress during a downpour; instead, it is a dry, functional part of the home’s footprint, backed by a solution engineered to last as long as the foundation itself.

This Davenport concrete project highlights the efficiency of our two-part system: high-density polyurethane foam for a clean, immediate lift and medical-grade sealant to block future moisture infiltration. The result is a level, durable surface achieved with minimal disruption.

In Davenport, IA, property maintenance is a game of inches. What begins as a subtle shift in a driveway can quickly evolve into a significant liability. Recently, a local homeowner noticed their concrete was no longer level—transitioning from a minor aesthetic nuisance to a genuine tripping hazard.

Rather than settling for a temporary patch, they partnered with MidAmerica Basement Systems for a sophisticated, engineered solution.

The Strategy: Lift, Level, and Protect
Our restoration process bypassed the mess of traditional mudjacking in favor of high-performance technology:

PolyLevel® Stabilization: We injected high-density polyurethane foam through minimal access points. This material expands with surgical precision, filling subterranean voids and lifting the heavy slabs back to their original elevation.

NexusPro® Integration: To ensure long-term durability, we applied NexusPro® Joint Sealant. This medical-grade silicone protects the foundation from moisture infiltration and UV degradation, preventing the cycle of erosion from restarting.

The Result: Structural Harmony
The transformation was seamless. By choosing proactive intervention over reactive repair, the homeowner restored both the safety and the curb appeal of their property. The result isn't just a level driveway; it’s an investment in permanent peace of mind.

MidAmerica Basement Systems recently completed a concrete repair project in Waverly, IA, for a homeowner struggling with significant tripping hazards on their driveway and sidewalks.

The process began with a professional assessment by Sales Professional Shawn Conaway, who designed a plan to stabilize and level the settling slabs. Foreman Justin Maddox and his crew then executed the repair using PolyLevel® to lift the concrete with high-strength foam and NexusPro® to seal the joints against future water damage. The result is a smooth, level, and safe walkway that restored both the home's curb appeal and the owner's peace of mind.

Ever feel like your own driveway is trying to trip you up? You aren’t alone. In beautiful Waverly, IA, we recently met a homeowner who was growing weary of the "obstacle course" leading up to their front door. Between the uneven sidewalk slabs and a driveway that had seen better days, the property had become a bit of a tripping hazard—and let's just say the family teenagers weren't letting them hear the end of it!

When it comes to concrete, "good enough" usually isn't safe enough. That’s why this homeowner decided it was time to call in the experts at MidAmerica Basement Systems.

The mission began with a visit from our Sales Professional, Shawn Conaway. As a true connoisseur of concrete, Shawn didn't just look at the cracks; he looked at what was happening beneath them. He expertly assessed how soil settlement had turned the driveway into a series of jagged edges and designed a custom repair plan to bring the entire surface back to life.

Once the plan was in place, it was time for the heavy lifting—minus the heavy machinery. Foreman Justin Maddox and his skilled crew arrived on the scene to execute the design with surgical precision. They utilized two of our most powerful concrete repair solutions:

PolyLevel®: Justin’s team injected high-strength polyurethane foam through tiny, pea-sized holes in the concrete. As the foam expanded, it lifted the heavy slabs back to their original, level height. It’s reliable science doing the hard work below the surface, raising those slabs like they were gym weights.

NexusPro®: With the slabs level again, the team applied NexusPro Joint Sealant. Think of this as "SPF for your driveway." It seals up cracks and joints, warding off the water invasions that wash away soil and cause premature aging.

The workmanship from Shawn’s initial design to Justin’s final cleanup was second to none. The team tidied up the site so thoroughly that the homeowner joked we must have waved a magical wand over the property.

What was once a "tripping adventure" is now a smooth, level path. Whether they are walking the dog or bringing in the groceries, every step now feels like a graceful ballet instead of a balancing act.

At MidAmerica Basement Systems, we believe in turning potential trips into triumphant sprints. This project is just more "concrete evidence" that our heart is in it every step of the way.

Is your concrete giving you a hard time? Give us a call today and let's get your home back on the level!

Leveling Up: How We Fixed a Major Driveway Trip Hazard in One Afternoon

Your driveway is more than just a place to park-it's the "welcome mat" to your home. But for one local homeowner, that welcome mat had become a major headache. Over time, shifting soil had caused the concrete slabs to settle unevenly, creating a jagged trip hazard that was a disaster waiting to happen for both tires and toes.

Most people assume that once concrete sinks, the only fix is an expensive, messy replacement. We're here to show you a better way. In just one afternoon, our team arrived, stabilized the foundation, and leveled the driveway back to its original height.

When concrete slabs become uneven, the issue is rarely the concrete itself—it’s the soil underneath. Whether due to poor compaction, erosion, or moisture changes, voids form under the driveway, causing heavy slabs to crack and sink.

In this case, the "lip" between the slabs had grown to over two inches. Not only was it a trip hazard for the family, but it was also a "tire killer" every time they pulled into the garage.

Instead of bringing in heavy machinery to rip out the old concrete (which can take days to pour and weeks to cure), we used PolyLevel.

Precision Drilling: We drilled small, penny-sized holes into the sunken slabs.

The Injection: We injected our high-density, waterproof foam into the voids.

The Lift: As the foam expanded, it gently but powerfully lifted the concrete back to a perfect level.

The Seal: We finished the job by sealing the joints with NexusPro, ensuring that water can’t get back under the slabs to cause future sinking.

The best part? This entire process was completed in just a few hours. While a new concrete pour would have left this driveway out of commission for a week, these homeowners were able to drive their cars back onto the surface just 15 minutes after we finished.

"I couldn't believe how fast it was. I left for errands with a broken driveway and came home to a perfectly level one." — The Huffstutler Family

By choosing leveling over replacement, the homeowner saved time, avoided a construction mess, and—most importantly—eliminated a dangerous hazard on their property. Their driveway is now stabilized, sealed, and ready to withstand the elements for years to come.

Not all wall cracks mean your house is falling down, but in the shifting soils of Iowa and Illinois, knowing the difference is vital for your home's safety. MidAmerica Basement Systems breaks down the warning signs:

Monitor (Low Concern): Hairline vertical cracks or small drywall gaps above doors are often just natural settling or concrete shrinkage. If they stay under 1/8 inch, keep an eye on them.

Act Now (High Concern): Horizontal cracks (indicating heavy soil pressure), stair-step cracks in masonry, and diagonal lines wider at the top are major red flags for structural failure or bowing walls.

Check the "Symptoms": If cracks are paired with sticking doors, gaps in your trim, or a visible bulge in your basement walls, the issue is likely structural.

The Solution: Instead of temporary patches, MidAmerica uses engineered Supportworks systems-like foundation piers, wall anchors, and CarbonArmor®-to stabilize your home and provide a permanent fix.

Finding a crack in your wall can feel like discovering a scratch on a brand-new car—it’s unsettling, and your mind immediately jumps to the worst-case scenario. In the Iowa and Illinois area, our soil is notorious for shifting, which means wall cracks are a common sight. But when is a crack just a "house blemish," and when is it a cry for help from your foundation?

At MidAmerica Basement Systems, we’ve spent over 35 years inspecting foundations from Davenport to Cedar Rapids and Peoria. Here is our guide to decoding those lines on your walls.

1. The "Take a Deep Breath" Cracks (Monitor These)

Not every crack is a catastrophe. Many are simply the result of your home "finding its seat" or the natural drying process of building materials.

Hairline Vertical Cracks: If the crack is thinner than a fingernail and runs straight up and down, it’s often a shrinkage crack from when the concrete cured.

Small Drywall Cracks: Thin cracks above doors or windows are common as a home settles into the soil during its first few years.

The Rule of Thumb: If it’s less than 1/8 inch wide and doesn’t seem to be growing, mark it with a pencil and check it again in a few months.

2. The "Call a Specialist" Cracks (Concern Level: High)

If you see these patterns, the soil surrounding your home is likely exerting more pressure than your foundation can handle.

Horizontal Cracks: These are a major red flag. They typically mean hydrostatic pressure (water-heavy soil) is pushing against your basement walls. This can lead to bowing or even total wall failure.

Stair-Step Cracks: Common in brick or block foundations, these follow the grout lines in a zigzag pattern. They almost always indicate differential settlement, where one part of your home is sinking faster than the rest.

Diagonal Cracks (45 Degrees): If a crack is wider at the top than the bottom and runs at an angle, it’s a sign that your foundation is "heaving" or sinking unevenly.

Beyond the Crack: Other Warning Signs

A wall crack rarely travels alone. At MidAmerica, we look for "symptom clusters" that confirm a structural issue:

Sticking Doors and Windows: If you suddenly have to "hip-check" a door to close it, the frame is likely out of square due to a shifting foundation.

Gaps in the Trim: Watch for spaces opening up between the wall and the ceiling or the floor and the baseboards.

Bowing Walls: If you look down the length of your basement wall and see a "bulge," the structural integrity is compromised.

Why the MidAmerica Approach is Different

We don’t believe in "Band-Aid" fixes like simply caulking a crack. If the underlying soil issue isn't fixed, the crack will just return. We use Supportworks engineered solutions to solve the problem permanently:

Helical or Push Piers: To stabilize and potentially lift a settling foundation back to its original position.

Wall Anchor Systems: To pull bowing walls back into place using the stable soil outside your home.

CarbonArmor®: Low-profile carbon fiber straps that reinforce walls with 10x the strength of steel.

FlexiSpan®: A specialized system for leaking cracks that provides a permanent, flexible seal that moves with your home.

Better Safe Than Sunk

The most expensive foundation repair is the one you waited too long to start. If you’re staring at a crack and wondering if it’s serious, don't guess.

MidAmerica Basement Systems offers Free, No-Obligation Inspections across Iowa and Illinois. We’ll give you an honest assessment so you can have peace of mind—or a permanent plan.

In Ladora, IA, we rescued a homeowner from an accidental "indoor pool" by tackling a basement crack that leaked every time it rained. Our System Design Specialist identified the culprit, and our production crew moved in with a high-performance Polyurethane Crack Injection to seal the water out for good.

The result? A damp, stressful cave was transformed into a dry, reliable space perfect for storage and living. We didn't just fix a crack; we brought back peace of mind-and kept the homeowner's shoes dry!

Ever had a basement that tried to double as a community swimming pool? One homeowner in Ladora, IA was living that soggy reality. Every time a heavy rain rolled through the neighborhood, their basement decided to host an unsolicited "aquatic escapade."

Instead of a cozy sanctuary for storage and living space, they had a "water feature" nobody asked for. Talk about a dampener on your day!

The Inspection: Finding the Culprit 🔍

Our team doesn't just show up; we suit up for a mission. Our System Design Specialist headed to Ladora to play detective. The verdict? A sneaky wall crack was acting as a VIP entrance for rainwater. It wasn't just a nuisance; it was a threat to every cardboard box and holiday decoration in the house.

The Hero: Polyurethane Crack Injection 💉

We didn't need a miracle; we needed science! Enter our production crew, armed with our favorite secret weapon: Polyurethane Crack Injection.

This isn't your average sealant. This "hero" expands to fill every nook and cranny of a crack, creating a flexible, permanent barrier that water simply can't argue with. Our crew worked their magic with vigor, sealing the walls and ensuring that the only thing "cascading" in that basement from now on is good vibes.

The Results: Dry Shoes and Peace of Mind 👟

We left the place cleaner than we found it and—more importantly—decidedly drier. Now, the homeowner can store memories without the fear of a "mildly dramatic" flood.

At MidAmerica Basement Systems, we believe your basement should be a place for storage, hobbies, or even a spontaneous dance party—not a place for scuba gear. When the clouds gather over Ladora, our clients stay high and dry.

When you own a piece of history, you aren't just a homeowner-you're a caretaker. In the charming town of Homestead, IA, one forward-thinking resident decided it was time to ensure their beloved 100-year-old home was ready for its second century of life.

They had big plans: spectacular renovations, modern updates, and a fresh aesthetic. But as any seasoned homeowner knows, a beautiful house is only as good as the foundation it sits on. And in this case, a hidden guest was lurking in the basement: Radon.

The Hidden Hurdle: Why Health Comes Before Aesthetics

It’s easy to get caught up in paint swatches and floor samples, but this homeowner knew that true modernization starts with health. Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can seep into even the most well-maintained historic homes. When the initial testing showed elevated levels, the renovation plans hit a temporary standstill. You can’t build a dream home on a foundation that isn’t safe for your family to breathe in.

That’s when they reached out to the team at MidAmerica Basement Systems. They weren't just looking for a quick fix; they wanted a permanent solution and total peace of mind.

The Inspection: More Than Just a Quick Look

We sent out one of our System Design Specialists—someone who knows the unique quirks of Iowa’s historic architecture like the back of their hand. After a "top-to-bottom" investigation, the diagnosis was clear. To protect this home for the next 100 years, it needed a Premium Radon Mitigation System.

The Transformation: From "Radon Menace" to Renovation-Ready

Our production crew swung into action with the kind of precision you’d expect from experts who treat every house like their own.

Careful Planning: We mapped out a system that would be effective without interfering with the home’s historic character.

Expert Installation: Our foremen and installers worked with a "gentle hum of teamwork," ensuring every pipe and seal was perfect.

The "Clean Sweep": We know renovations are messy enough as it is. Our team left the basement "neat as a pin," removing every trace of the installation process except for the quiet, life-saving system now at work.

The Result: A Hearty, Healthy Home

Today, that Homestead home stands tall and—most importantly—safe. By tackling the radon issue head-on before swinging the first hammer of their renovation, the owners have future-proofed their legacy.

As the "after" photos show, the basement is now a clean slate. It’s no longer a source of worry; it’s a foundation for the next century of memories.

Our production team installed a professional-grade waterproofing "ensemble" designed to manage water flow and provide a thermal break:

CleanSpace® Vapor Barrier: A high-durability 20-mil poly-reinforced liner was applied to the walls. This stops water vapor from entering the basement and drains any wall leaks down into the drainage system.

TerraBlock™ Insulation: To combat the cold Iowa ground, TerraBlock was installed. This specialized foam insulation provides a thermal break and a cushioning effect, making the floor significantly warmer and more comfortable.

Drainage Matting: Placed beneath the floor treatments, this dimpled matting creates a dedicated "hidden path," allowing water to flow unobstructed to the sump pump without ever touching the basement floor.

Why Should I Choose PolyLevel Over Mudjacking?

While traditional mudjacking has been the standard for decades, PolyLevel® offers a modern, long-lasting alternative for Davenport homeowners by using a lightweight, waterproof foam that stabilizes sinking concrete without adding the heavy, erosion-prone weight of a mud-and-cement slurry. By injecting high-density polymers through tiny, penny-sized holes, MidAmerica Basement Systems can restore your driveway or sidewalk to its original height in minutes, providing a clean and permanent solution that withstands Iowa's unpredictable weather and soil shifts.

If you’ve noticed your driveway, sidewalk, or patio starting to sink or tilt, you aren’t alone. Here in Davenport and across the MidAmerica region, our soil loves to move. Between the humid summers and the brutal freeze-thaw cycles of an Iowa winter, the ground beneath your concrete is constantly shifting. When it comes to fixing those trip hazards, you generally have two choices: the old-school method (Mudjacking) or the modern solution (PolyLevel). At MidAmerica Basement Systems, we believe in doing a job once and doing it right. Here is why PolyLevel is the clear winner for your home.

It’s Lightweight (Stop the Sinking Cycle)

The biggest irony of mudjacking is the material used to "fix" the problem. Mudjacking pumps a heavy slurry of sand, cement, and soil under your concrete. This mixture is incredibly heavy.

If your concrete sank because the soil underneath was too weak to support it, adding thousands of pounds of "mud" only makes the problem worse over time. It’s like trying to save a sinking boat by filling it with bricks.

PolyLevel is a high-density polyurethane foam. It weighs next to nothing but possesses incredible lifting power. It levels your concrete without putting unnecessary stress on the soil below.

Say Goodbye to "Washout"

We get plenty of rain in the Quad Cities, and that rain is the enemy of mudjacking. Because mudjacking uses an organic soil-based mixture, it can erode. Over time, water can literally wash your repair away, leaving you with the same sunken slab you started with.

PolyLevel is waterproof. It won’t wash out, it won’t react with the soil, and it won't degrade over time. Once it’s under there, it’s there for good.

Minimal Footprint, Maximum Curb Appeal

No one wants their driveway to look like it just underwent surgery.

Mudjacking requires large holes—roughly the size of a soda can—to be drilled into your concrete to accommodate the thick slurry.

PolyLevel injections are performed through tiny holes no bigger than a penny.

Once we finish the job and patch the holes, the repair is nearly invisible, leaving your home looking pristine.

Ready to Use in 15 Minutes

In the world of home repair, "patience" is a dirty word. Traditional mudjacking can take 24 to 72 hours to fully cure before you can drive your car back into the garage. With PolyLevel, the expansion and hardening process happens almost instantly. In most cases, you can walk or even drive on your concrete just 15 minutes after we finish.

The Comparison at a Glance

PolyLevel®

Traditional Mudjacking

The effort to keep homes warm in winter creates the Stack Effect, which causes dangerous indoor levels of radon, an invisible, odorless radioactive gas and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Winter heating drives the Stack Effect: warm air rises and escapes, creating a powerful negative pressure (vacuum) in the lower levels of the house. This vacuum actively sucks radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation into the home. Because the house is sealed against the cold, there is no fresh air to dilute the accumulating radon. Therefore, winter is the ideal time to test your home for radon, and if levels are high (above 4.0 pCi/L), professional mitigation is necessary to safely vent the gas outdoors.

The Cold Truth About Indoor Air

The arrival of winter means cozy evenings and keeping the cold air outside where it belongs. We seal our windows, turn up the heat, and happily hibernate. But this very effort to stay warm creates a dangerous phenomenon inside your home: The Stack Effect, which can cause your radon levels to peak right when you are spending the most time indoors.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. If you haven't tested your home, or if you tested in a different season, winter is the time to pay attention.

What is Radon and Where Does it Come From?

Radon is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas. It is naturally formed by the breakdown of uranium soil found in rocks, soil, and water. As it breaks down, it seeps out of the ground and into the air. While harmless outdoors, it becomes hazardous when trapped inside an enclosed space where it can accumulate to dangerous levels.

The Stack Effect

When you turn on your furnace to fight the winter chill, you are essentially turning your home into a giant chimney, driving the stack effect. Here's how it works:

Warm Air Rises: Heated air inside your home is less dense than the cold outside air. This warm air naturally rises and escapes through upper-level openings, such as attic vents, chimneys, and cracks near the roofline.

Negative Pressure: As the warm air escapes from the top, it creates a powerful vacuum of negative pressure in the lower parts of your home such as the basement or crawl space.

The Suction: This negative pressure aggressively sucks replacement air from the path of least resistance, which is often the soil directly beneath your foundation. This is how radon gas is pulled into your home through cracks, sumps, and utility penetrations.

Because you keep your home closed up during the winter, there is no fresh air coming in to dilute the constantly accumulating radon gas.

The Solution? Test Now

Understanding the Stack Effect is the first step, taking action is next.

Test Your Home (It's Simple!): Winter is the ideal time for an accurate radon test because the Stack Effect is maximizing your potential levels. If your reading is high now, you have a year-round problem. We offer simple, approved testing kits to help determine the levels in your home.

Mitigate Immediately: If your test results show levels above the EPA action level of 4.0pCi/L, professional mitigation is necessary. A certified radon mitigation system works by reversing the stack effect. We install a pipe and fan system that creates negative pressure beneath your foundation, capturing radon gas and venting it safely above your roofline before it even enters your living space. Crucially, a professional system does this without compromising your home's heat or energy efficiency.

Don't Wait for Spring

Don't let the effort to stay warm this winter expose your family to an invisible threat. Testing your home for radon is an essential part of your winter home safety plan.

Ready to find out if the Stack Effect in impacting your family's health? MidAmerica Basement Systems can help. We offer easy to use test kits and can mitigate your home quickly and efficiently.
The freeze-thaw cycle is a powerful winter force that attacks your foundation. It widens cracks, creates pressure that bows walls, and can ruin your basement slab. Protect your home by checking drainage and sealing any small cracks before the deep freeze hits.

When winter hits, everyone worries about burst pipes. But there's a quieter, more powerful enemy at work right under your home: the freeze-thaw cycle. If you live where the ground freezes, this cycle is silently pushing your small foundation problems into major, expensive disasters.

What is the Freeze-Thaw Cycle?

It's simply the constant freezing and melting of water in and around your homes foundation. It happens every time the temperature goes up and down around the freezing mark.

The Power of Freezing Water

Here is a key fact: When liquid water turns to ice, it grows by about 9%. Imagine Taking a water bottle, filling it completely, and screwing the lid on tight. When you put it in the freezer, it bursts because it needs more room. The same powerful pressure is happening inside the tiny cracks of your concrete foundation.

3 Ways Winter Ice Ruins Your Foundation

This constant freezing and melting attacks your foundation in three main ways:

1. It Turns Small Cracks into Big Leaks (The Pothole Effect)

You know how small cracks into the road turn into massive potholes after winter? The same thing happens to your basement walls.

Step 1 (The Crack Fills): Snow melts or rain falls, and the water seeps into the tiny cracks already in your concrete.

Step 2 (The Freeze): The temperature drops, and the water turns into ice. This ice expands acting like a tiny wedge or lever, making the crack wider.

Step 3 (The Melt): The ice melts, leaving a bigger space for even more water to fill up next time.

This cycle repeats all winter, and by spring, that hairline crack you ignored can be wide enough to let in a stream of water.

2. The Ground Pushes Back (Frost Heave)

Your foundation is surrounded by soil. When the water inside that soil freezes, it expands, not just outward, but it also pushes upward and inward with enormous force. This is called frost heave. Think of it like being slowly squeezed by the frozen earth. The outward pressure against your basement walls can cause serious structural damage, like:

Bowed Walls: The walls start to lean or curve inward.

Stair-Step Cracks: Cracks that follow the mortar lines in concrete block walls.

If the walls are shifting, it's a structural problem that needs a professional fix, not just simple crack sealing.

3. It Lifts Your Basement Floor

The freezing soil can also expand beneath your concrete basement floor. If water gets trapped underneath the slab, the expanding ice can push sections of your floor up, causing:

New Floor Cracks: Cracks that run across the slab.

Uneven Floors: Areas of the floor that look raised or shifted

How to Protect Your Home Before the Deep Freeze

The best time to fight freeze-thaw damage is before the coldest part of winter is here.

Get Water Away From the House: This is your #1 job. Make sure your gutters are clean and your downspout extensions send water far away, at least 6 to 10 feet from your foundation.

Check for Visible Cracks: Walk around the outside of your house. If you see any cracks, no matter how small, have them looked at by a foundation expert. Sealing them today stops the ice from breaking them apart tomorrow.

Watch for Interior Clues: Keep an eye on the inside of your home. If doors or windows suddenly stick, or if you see new cracks in your drywall, it can be a sign that the foundation is shifting.

The Bottom Line: Foundation problems don't take a break because it's too cold. The freeze-thaw cycle is an aggressive force that turns small moisture issues into major structural headaches. Protect your home and wallet by addressing the small issues now.

Are you worried about how your foundation is holding up this winter? We offer free inspections to assess freeze-thaw damage and recommend permanent fixes throughout Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. Contact us today!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 3, 2019

Davenport, IA – Thousands of people in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas could be saved from radon-related lung cancer by testing for and then, if needed, installing a radon mitigation system. Radon is a cancer-causing gas that can seep into homes, businesses, and schools and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Tom Kelly, Former Director of EPA’s Indoor Environments Division. “We know that radon is a carcinogen. Research confirms that breathing low levels of radon can lead to lung cancer.” (www.epa.gov/radon)

To raise awareness of radon, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated January as Radon Action Month in 1999. Why January? The best time to test is when you have “closed house conditions”. Closed house conditions are when the windows are closed and less likely to be used, and less traffic in and out of your home. In addition to raising radon awareness, this month of action is meant to encourage people to get their homes, work spaces, and schools tested for radon.

MidAmerica Basement Systems is the local leader in radon. “MidAmerica Basement Systems’ radon experts can help determine if a building’s radon levels are above the EPAs recommended 4.0 pCi/L, and if so, can install an aesthetically pleasing and affordable radon mitigation system.

Radon Action Month is a collaborative effort between the EPA and other national organizations dedicated to lowering radon exposure, like the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST), of which MidAmerica Basement Systems is a member.

Owner, Howard Tatge states that testing and mitigating will help save lives here and all over the United States. “Through our continued work to increase awareness about radon’s dangers, testing homes and mitigating homes, I look forward to the day when we can eliminate lung cancer deaths caused by radon exposure.”

The team at MidAmerica Basement Systems knows that most people have an impression of construction companies and the people who work in them.

Unreliable, can't get a real person on the phone, being treated like you're an afterthought, they don't clean up after themselves - and the saddest part, homeowners have come to expect that, or that it's acceptable.

The team at MidAmerica Basement Systems thinks that's ridiculous! They believe the homeowner experience should and can be more. They envision a company where every "touch" in the process of working with their company not only exceeds expectations, but creates new expectations for how a homeowner should be treated. They strive everyday to show their homeowners that they are, in fact, their reason for being as a company.

For the past month, the WQAD viewing area has been entering into the Basement and Crawlspace Foundation Repair Giveaway put on by MidAmerica Basement Systems. Each contestant was giving the opportunity to a free estimate and entry. Today was the day to announce the lucky contestant!

Since September 15th, 2017, over 600 contestants have entered their information into the WQAD Basement and Crawlspace Foundation Repair Giveaway in hopes that their foundation problems will soon be resolved. Today, Zach and Lindsey Schwarz of Davenport, Iowa can finally rejoice!

For the past four years, Zach and Lindsey have lived on a home on Hillcrest Avenue, and were looking to sell to move into a bigger home for their family. Everything was going smoothly and were in the process of closing on the home, until the potential buyers pulled their bid due to unstable foundation. The home inspector made aware to the buyers, and brought attention to Zach and Lindsey, that the home’s foundation had significantly settled, causing sinking to a large portion of the home.

“We had accepted the buyers’ bid, and started packing up and had moved our belongings out. Then a couple weeks before the closing, they pulled their bid. We were not only left with an empty house, but a house with a large settlement problem,” states Zach. “When we first moved in four years ago, we never had this settlement issue, or, at least it wasn’t brought to our attention before we purchased.” As Zach continued he talked about the other issues the home was having: sticking doors and windows, cracks throughout the walls and sloping floors.

Once the Schwarz were aware of the horrible news about the home, they knew that if they were ever going to sell the house, the problem was a MUST FIX to sell. They heard about the contest, and entered their information, in hopes that during their estimate, the damage wasn’t too extensive. Expert design specialist, Mac McDaniel, had good but bad news. Good news was the settled foundation was fixable, but the bad news was not a cheap fix. A 13-Push-Pier System was in need to stabilize the home’s foundation, and make it suitable to sell to future homebuyers. Zach and Lindsey had a lot to discuss, putting their own homebuying and moving, on a stand still. Finally, the day came to announce the winner of the contest.

Mac and Howard, owner and GM of MidAmerica Basement Systems, approached the Schwarz’s home with exciting news. Presenting the Schwarz’s with a $10,000 check to repair the foundation, ecstatic and speechless, Zach and his son paraded around the home with gratitude. The home could finally be fixed and be suitable to sell! They can now continue the search for a new home themselves. Zach and Lindsey can’t give enough thanks to MidAmerica Basement Systems and WQAD for the opportunity in repairing their home and making it all possible.

Congratulations Zach and Lindsey!

Each year Basement Systems holds a convention to help celebrate the success of all the dealers across the network, introduce new products, and teach classes about all types of necessities on what it takes to be a successful dealer. There are over 300 dealers in the network that come and learn from the best of the best, and hear from the founder and CEO of Basement Systems, Larry Janesky. This year, being the biggest IMPACT yet.

Howard Tatge, owner and general manager of MidAmerica Basement Systems, joined the Basement Systems network in the early 1990’s, providing his customers with expertise in basement waterproofing. Over the years, Tatge expanded his business, becoming a certified dealer in Foundation Supportworks Inc., CleanSpace Nation, National Radon Defense, and most recently, Total Basement Finishing. At MidAmerica Basement Systems, we are committed to 100% customer satisfaction. In being said, we could not shine without the satisfaction of our customers to create the IMPACT that was needed in to success of our business.

This year, Tatge and MidAmerica Basement Systems earned three awards in basement waterproofing, Total Basement Finishing, and CleanSpace installation. Ranking in the top 50 dealers for Basement Systems in Waterproofing, the company shined being the #17 dealer in the overall network. This was only the beginning of the stunning performance put on by the company.

In early 2016, Tatge took on yet another expansion for the company, becoming a Total Basement Finishing dealer. Sales began skyrocketing, landing him the #9 dealer in the network. Within just one year, customers turned more and more to the Total Basement Finishing products, helping MidAmerica Basement Systems reach for the stars, and accomplish being one of the top 10 dealers in the franchise.

For years, Tatge and MidAmerica Basement Systems have been a certified dealer in CleanSpace Nation. Offering a moisture barrier, called CleanSpace. CleanSpace is a liner that permanently seals moisture off from untreated crawlspaces and/or leaking foundation walls, aiding in a healthier structured home. This year at convention, the company was applauded for reaching the milestone of installing “1 Million Square Feet of CleanSpace”.

Tatge and the staff of MidAmerica Basement Systems are beyond grateful to have received these awards and want to thank all of our customers.
Leaking basements and excessive moisture can lead to mold and structural damage when left untreated. For the Historical LeClaire Hotel in Moline, IL, 30 plus years the basement was left unattended and untreated, leaving the building at great risk! With help from MidAmerica Basement Systems, the longevity of the historic building's life has greatly increased!

The Historic LeClaire Hotel, now known as the LeClaire Apartments, located in downtown Moline, Illinois, was built in 1922. Standing 168 feet tall, the 15-story building was, and still is, the tallest building in the Quad Cities. The luxurious hotel hosted many celebrities and presidents, and had the most elegant ballroom called Top Hat. After closing down in the mid-1980’s, the building sat unoccupied for ten years before being purchased and registered as a National Historic Place on February 4th, 1994. Today, renovations have made the rooms accommodating for apartment living.

The basement area, that once accompanied the mechanical heating and ventilation systems, a service passage to the LeClaire Theater, a small public lobby, three elevators, a barber shop, bathing rooms, public rest rooms, and underground trolley, no longer exist. Areas were boarded up with concrete blocks and wooden doors, which now have crumbled and rotted away due to extensive water and moisture that has leaked over the years. The Historic LeClaire Hotel was beginning to slowly crumble at its own foundation. Some areas of the basement would collect more than five-inches of standing water, damaging what was left of the historical basement.

Alex Fletcher, property manager of the LeClaire Apartments, was in desperate need to preserve the building’s basement and MidAmerica Basement Systems was contacted to help. Design specialist, David McDaniel, had discovered a large concern of iron ocher, which poses large threat to any waterproofing system. Iron ocher is an orange-colored sludge that can cause blockage in piping systems, sump pumps, and discharge lines, leaving a larger mess than before. Once the bacteria is present, it will always be present, leaving the waterproofing system at a constant risk. MidAmerica Basement Systems has a patented drainage system called WaterGuard Iron Ochre System (IOS) that allows for a system to be properly maintained and managed, preventing iron ocher back-ups. Much like the WaterGuard Drainage System, WaterGuard IOS allows for access at any area of the tile to be opened and flushed out. Using a constant 140-degree Fahrenheit water temperature or concentrated peroxide, will treat the iron ocher build-ups, allowing for proper water flow throughout the waterproofing system, keeping the basement dry and healthy.

Along with the WaterGuard IOS, Trench Drains, CleanSpace Liner, and five (5) SuperSumps were installed to maintain the appropriate dry basement. WaterGuard IOS and Trench Drains were installed around the perimeter of the building’s basement to collect and redirect the leaking water to the SuperSumps. Some areas of the older foundation in the basement also received CleanSpace Liner to help redirect seeping wall water to the WaterGuard IOS and Train Drains. CleanSpace Liner also help reduce the moisture from entering the area. Having five (5) SuperSumps installed is necessary to insure the proper function of each sump will not be overworked, and to accommodate for the amount of water that enters the basement area. With proper system maintenance, the basement of the Historical LeClaire Hotel will greatly increase the longevity of the building’s life.

MidAmerica receives award reflecting high level of customer service from Angie's List.

MidAmerica Basement Systems has earned the home service industry’s coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award, reflecting an exemplary year of customer service to members of the local services marketplace and consumer review site in 2016.

This achievement is particularly significant as Angie’s List experienced unprecedented member growth in 2016. More than 1.6 million consumers, many of whom were eager to quickly hire highly qualified service pros, joined Angie’s List after the company added a new, free membership tier.

“Companies that can meet higher demands without missing a beat in their exemplary performance standards truly do stand apart from their peers,” said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks. “Only a fraction of the basement waterproofing and foundation repair companies in Iowa and Illinois were able to do it.”

Angie’s List Super Service Award 2016 winners have met strict eligibility requirements, which include an “A” rating in overall grade, recent grade, and review period grade. The SSA winners must also be in good standing with Angie’s List, pass a background check and abide by Angie’s List operational guidelines.

Service company ratings are updated daily on Angie’s List as new, verified consumer reviews are submitted. Companies are graded on an A through F scale in areas ranging from price to professionalism to punctuality.

For more than 21 years, Angie’s List restricted access to its verified reviews to consumers who paid membership fees. When the company removed that barrier, some companies worried that the new, non-paying members would not be as engaged as members of the past. Experience has shown, however, that these newly added members are just as engaged – across all age groups – as prior members. Also, because the company continues to adhere to its review verification process, there has been no degradation of review quality.

“The biggest change at Angie’s List is that we are connecting even more consumers to high quality service professionals,” Hicks said. “And that’s good for everyone.”

Angie's List helps facilitate happy transactions between more than 4.5 million consumers nationwide and its collection of highly rated service providers in more than 720 categories of service, ranging from home improvement to health care. Built on a foundation of more than 10 million verified reviews of local service, Angie's List connects consumers directly to its online marketplace of services from member-reviewed providers, and offers unique tools and support designed to improve the local service experience for both consumers and service professionals.

MidAmerica Basement Systems has been solely owned and operated by Howard Tatge since 1997. Tatge joined the fairly new company in 1994 as both an installer and system design specialist. Within a year, Tatge was promoted to Vice President and General Manager after installing several hundred basement systems and purchasing 47% of the company's stock. In 1997, Howard Tatge purchased the rest of the company's stock and became the sole owner and operator of MidAmerica Basement Systems.

2017 marks Howard Tatge's 20th year as the owner of MidAmerica Basement Systems. Working alongside Howard for the eleven of the most recent years is Accounting Manager, Kim Benthin. "You know, Howard's inspired me many times over the years," Kim reflects. When Benthin started, the business was comprised of three office personnel, three installation crews, three system design specialists, one sales manager, and one service technician. Now, MidAmerica Basement Systems has more than tripled in growth with greater than sixty employees, and helped thousands of families along the way.

Many of Howard Tatge's employees are inspired by Tatge's stories of success. As a young man in his late teens and early 20s, Tatge was the manager of a full service gas station. Afterwards, Howard went on to the auto parts business, where he eventually owned his very own auto parts and service store. After the flood of 1993, Tatge decided to pursue a new career in basement waterproofing, and the rest is history. Marketing Manager, Sara Pethoud, comments that Tatge has inspired her by "being the kind of leader that wants his employees to succeed with him."

Congratulations, Howard Tatge, for 20 years of success as the owner of MidAmerica Basement Systems!

In addition to feeding over 500 people weekly, Kings Harvest Ministries also has a year-round shelter that sleeps roughly 20 people. They have 10 semi-permanent residents who live at the shelter short term while getting back on their feet. In the winter, a temporary shelter for roughly 60 people opens to protect the homeless from the dangerous elements.
