Understanding the Stack Effect: How a Damp Crawl Space Affects Your Entire Home

Many homeowners view their crawl space as an isolated area that does not impact the rest of the house. However, due to a natural building science principle known as the stack effect, the air in your crawl space is constantly moving up into your living areas.

As warm air rises and escapes through your roof, it creates a vacuum that pulls cold, damp air out of the earth floor beneath your home. If your crawl space is unsealed, this process continuously introduces high humidity, musty odors, and airborne mold spores into your family's breathing air, while slowly causing floor joists to sag and rot.

To permanently break this cycle, our System Design Specialist, Kevin O'Neill, designed a comprehensive isolation strategy for a recent project in Silvis, IL. Our production crew, consisting of Devin B, Nathan B, and JB, executed the transformation to create a clean, dry below-grade environment.

The team first covered the dirt floor with specialized drainage matting to prevent water from pooling beneath the system. Next, they encapsulated the entire space using the CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System. This heavy-duty, multi-layer plastic liner is treated with an antimicrobial additive to resist mold and is completely sealed along the seams and foundation walls.

By completely isolating the house from the damp earth, the encapsulation system immediately drops humidity levels, stops wood rot, and prevents structural sagging. It also blocks unhealthy allergens from entering your living spaces, leading to cleaner indoor air and lower heating and cooling bills.

If your home has bouncy floors or a persistent musty smell, it is time to address the root cause. Explore the crawl space encapsulation products on our website to see how our team can help you build a healthier home from the ground up.
