How to Have Warmer Floors in the Winter Time

How to Have Warmer Floors in the Winter Time - Image 1

The winter is a great time to stay inside the house, maybe next to a fireplace or with a hot cocoa. Even if you're the kind of person who loves winter sports, most of us will agree that when you're inside, you just want to be warm. For some reason, though, the floors are always cold in the winter time! Often the reason for the cold floors is actually what is beneath them: a basement or a crawlspace.

The organic foundation materials, like concrete or block, undergo a heat transfer, allowing a lot of heat to escape through the foundation. Therefor, the basement just doesn't stay warm, causing the floors above it to be cold and the energy bill to rise. To lower energy bills, and keep your feet warm in the cold winter, consider insulating your basement or crawlspace.

Lower energy bills are a fantastic reason to insulate your basement or crawlspace. However, there's another really important reason to keep that space warm. In the winter, your pipes have the potential to freeze, burst and cause thousands of dollars worth of damage. If you have any plumbing that runs through your basement or crawlspace, you should get your basement or crawlspace insulated to prevent expensive damage to your plumbing. Think about this: if your water pipes freeze and burst, you will not only have an expensive mess, but you may not be afforded the opportunity for warm water in your house. Take a preventative step in keeping your home warm, and your plumbing safe from the elements.

There are a variety of ways to insulate the basement or crawlspace. Read about ways to make your basement warmer here, and your crawlspace warmer here and keep your feet warm this winter. Don't forget: estimates with MidAmerica Basement Systems are always free!
