Driveway Subgrade Consolidation and Joint Encapsulation in Cedar Rapids, IA
Challenge
Subgrade soil compaction and localized hydrologic washout created severe panel settlement across the driveway structure. Unsealed control joints allowed surface water infiltration, eroding the underlying sub-base sand and creating subterranean voids. Deprived of uniform continuous bearing capacity, the unreinforced concrete slabs underwent rotational settlement under vehicular loads, causing vertical displacement between adjacent panels. This created chassis impact hazards for low-clearance vehicles and increased structural shear stress on the concrete.
Solution
To restore structural alignment and prevent future erosion without demolition, the field crew executed a trenchless geopolymer injection and elastomeric sealing protocol.
First, for subgrade consolidation and lifting, the crew established a strategic port matrix across the settled panels and drilled discrete injection ports. High-density, closed-cell PolyLevel® polyurethane foam was injected into the subgrade void space under pressure. The hydrophobic polymer expanded rapidly, filling subterranean voids, compacting loose base soil, and exerting upward pneumatic force to lift the sunken slabs to coplanar alignment.
Second, for surface waterproofing, the crew prepped all control joints and surface fissures, applying NexusPro® joint sealant. This UV-resistant, silicone-based elastomeric sealant forms an impermeable barrier against future water ingress and freeze-thaw degradation.
The intervention successfully re-established a flush, load-bearing surface and permanently stabilized the driveway foundation.
